California Residents
DōMatcha® and Proposition 65
Proposition 65 is a California law passed in 1986 by direct vote in order to protect drinking water sources from toxic substances, as well as reduce or eliminate exposure to harmful chemicals in consumer products. Proposition 65 warns against any product that contains measurable quantities of any one of the over 800 chemicals named in the law, many of which are naturally occurring.
Due to Proposition 65’s unique and stringent requirements, every order sent to California must include a warning label. This warning also applies to public buildings, entertainment sites, hotels, gas stations, transport depots, and many other kinds of products throughout the state.
If the State of California recognizes a chemical to contain a carcinogen or potentially cause any reproductive harm, then they must by law be subject to the Proposition 65 warning. Lead, which naturally occurs in earth, sea water, and groundwater, is often named with a Proposition 65 warning if there is a larger presence than 0.5 micrograms per consumption day in a substance. Some plants may contain very small levels of lead, which often occur naturally in the earth, and in groundwater, which are well below many regulatory bodies’ stated maximum intake levels. This amount is far lower than the amount thought to cause any reproductive harm in humans.
Although DōMatcha® products have tested well below the minimum for any harmful substance, due to the strict and comprehensive requirements for Proposition 65, we have chosen to include a warning for all products shipped to California. We are now living in an industrialized world where lead contamination has been the byproduct of many different industries and has caused lead presence in the air, earth, water, and plants.
Although the lead content in DōMatcha® products is very low, we cannot claim that it is there naturally, as it is impossible to determine given lead’s presence in the natural cycles of the world. However, our matcha products do not contain any additional additives. We test our product in Japan for heavy metals and radiation, and in Canada again for radiation and nutritional analysis. DōMatcha® is committed to providing pristine and high-grade products, which is why we invest in testing to ensure that any dangerous levels of contaminants including lead or radiation would be detected far before coming into contact with consumers.
