Health Trends to Watch Out for in 2023 Ft. Domatcha

January 16, 2023

With a new year upon us, many aspire to get healthier, more energetic, and fit. However, the plethora of information out there can often lead to overwhelm and stress. At Domatcha, we believe in following your gut (quite literally), listening to your body, professional advice, and combining that data to make the soundest decisions for your well-being. There’s no secret to a healthy body and life; it’s a combination of practicing consistent habits that suit your lifestyle and making changes (sometimes drastic) when necessary. We tried our best to provide solid soundboards to pick out some of the most promising health trends to watch for in 2023.

Health Trend #1: Digital Transformation—Virtual Fitness

The pandemic has left many gym/barre/yoga/kickboxing enthusiasts stranded with nothing to do but nervous pace walking, Kardashian binge-watching, and sourdough baking. Just thinking about that time brings shudders down our spine.

Luckily, necessity gave birth to innovation; and many studios turned to VR technology to stay afloat. From March 2020 to October 2020, the sales of fitness equipment and gadgets doubled, according to NDP retail data. Similar to how our daily work and social activities turned to Zoom, fitness studios pivoted to live streaming technology to bring high-impact workouts to their customers. This trend is not going away either.

For example, Lululemon Athletica recently released their virtual at-home studio equipment—the Mirror, which at approximately $1000, gives people access to thousands of on-demand workout classes—all from home.

Health Trend #2: Mental Health and Self-Care Takes Precedent

The word “health” has been traditionally attributed to the physical body. In 2023, the focus on how the mind impacts the body will only grow stronger. Close to half of the participants in a recent study between 18-24 stated that they worked out to improve their mental health.

Mental health problems, like depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, can lead to nutrition deficiencies, chronic fatigue, and weight-related problems. According to a whitepaper done by Deloitte, stress and burnout have been increasing rapidly in Millennials and Gen Zs, which can adversely impact gut health, leading to bloating, heartburn, indigestion and malabsorption of critical nutrients.

At Domatcha, we believe in the importance of nourishing your brain and your body. Therefore, we recommend replacing coffee in our diets with matcha, as coffee is highly stimulating and can lead to crashes and increased anxiety. Matcha green tea is nature’s largest source of L-theanine, which has been shown to increase alpha waves in the brain and induce feelings of calmness. When not constantly in fight or flight mode, we can experience lower cortisol levels, lower resting heart rates, blood pressure, and better digestion.

Health Trend #3: Malleable Metabolic Health

The masses previously assumed metabolism was genetically predisposed; you either metabolized things faster (fast metabolism) or slower (slow metabolism). People often resorted to using slow metabolism to excuse their inability to lose unhealthy weight.

It’s now been shown that various factors can influence your resting metabolic rate (how many calories you burn at rest), including increasing muscle mass, meal timing, and improving your gut health through diet.

You can also leverage plant-based foods that enhance your metabolic health at a cellular level; these include capsaicin from red hot peppers, veld grape, and catechin EGCG from green tea. When you consume matcha green tea, it’s like drinking a smoothie with all the nutrients left intact, as opposed to just the juice—which is essentially comparable to tea bags. Our organic ceremonial matcha contains about a third of the caffeine from coffee but is a powerhouse of antioxidants such as catechins, vitamin C, and amino acids like L-theanine.

Health Trend #3: The Gut, the Second Brain

The prioritization of gut health, with all the kimchi, kombucha and gut juices associated with it, isn’t going anywhere soon. The gut has been touted by many medical researchers as “the second brain”, and for a very fair reason. The gut has been proven to significantly impact brain health, including mood changes.

If you have an inflamed gut, it’s likely that you won’t be able to fully utilize the energy and nutrients you’re consuming, regardless of how healthy you eat.

Luckily, there are many ways you can improve your gut health, including reducing overall stress, taking daily probiotics, reducing acidic foods like coffee and processed carbohydrates, and eating more alkalized foods like vegetables, whole grains, and matcha green tea.

Health Trend #4: Mushroom Mania

Mushrooms, much like matcha, have been consumed for thousands of years. Our ancestors foraged them and used them for culinary and healing purposes. Today, mushrooms are grabbing the attention of many health specialists, medical doctors, naturopaths, holistic nutritionists, and athletes for many health benefits and healing effects. Lion’s Mane is a type of mushroom with two special compounds:  hericenones and erinacines, which have been shown to stimulate the growth of brain cells. In animal studies, Lion’s Mane has been shown to reduce the severity of degenerative brain diseases like dementia and memory loss.

Besides its powerful regenerative effects, researchers found that Lion’s Mane extract improved the functioning of the hippocampus in mice studies and reduced anxiety and stress. Medicinal mushrooms like Chaga and Lion’s Mane are making themselves into the mainstream, popping up in teas, hot chocolate, ‘coffees,’ supplement pills, and baked goods.

For premium and locally sourced mushroom products we recommend checking out and Teonan, which carries a range of delicious mushroom based functional beverage mixes, including this matcha latte. If you’re looking for pure mushroom supplements, check out Stay Wyld Organics where everything is grown in their B.C. facilities to ensure consistent high quality.

Conclusion: Guts, Brains, and Body

Moving into 2023, the whole mind-body-gut connection will dominate the health and wellness space, with more companies innovating and returning to our ancestral roots for inspiration. With the advance of technology, it will become easier to mass produce food products geared toward improving our overall health, making wellness more accessible to the general population. The term “mental health” will continue circulating in wellness communities and younger generations alike. At Domatcha, we’re persistent in bringing you the latest information on health and wellness.
